MAINLAND – END TO END

MAINLAND – END TO END

Originally uploaded by arctica.

Our first day of continuous rain and mist (in six weeks) saw us sailing from Papa Stour up to the beautiful fjord-like Sand Voe at the N tip of the Mainland. Next day we had an exhilarating sail, well reefed down in a Force 6/7, all the way down to Lerwick in gradually brightening weather. Since we got here the weather has been perfect. We met up with Bob and Kate, up from Glasgow to exhibit their vintage motorbike at the Classic Motor Show, and went with them to a ‘Foy’ – a supper ceilidh dance. Today we visited the Show – fascinating – and then took the bus to Sumburgh airport and walked out along the cliff top to Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, the S tip of the Mainland. Tomorrow we set off to visit the islands of Whalsay, Unst and the Out Skerries before returning to Lerwick before our North Sea crossing.

    Hi Guys
Sorry I have not posted comment although I have been dipping in and out. I’ve been a wee bit busy checking out the spas in Italy and the shoe factories in Spain! …..and then again there is the little time consuming activity of work.
My memories of visiting Shetland are all to do with having to reach schools across several stormy waters and trying to look as if I was really enjoying myself!! I can’t begin to anticipate the thought of your journey across the North Sea. I am wondering where you are at this very moment. Am really looking forward to views of the norwegian coast as I haven’t visited there by boat, plane or any other vessel. Brian I can hear you playing the “mouthie” anchored in a sea, mirror reflected fiord on a quiet summer’s evening while Maggi enjoys a quiet, reflective glass of something. I might even be encouraged to get the paints out to reflect your images on canvas!
Hi Morag and Euan who would have thought it after all these years you two on your bikes and trikes around Central and Southern Europe and Brian and Maggi sailing the calm / stormy waters of Northern Europe.
    Keep sailing onwards and upwards.
